A Few Words on our Practicum…

Greetings and welcome! I’d love to share a little bit about our Media Freedom & Information Access Practicum.

Our mission is twofold: to support a robust investigative role for media actors, and to preserve the public’s right of access to information. The ultimate goal of our Practicum is to ensure that the press, in both legacy and new media formats, continues to effectively contribute to a well-informed public sphere.

Our docket will be composed chiefly of cases in support of core newsgathering functions (e.g. access to sealed documents, government records and proceedings). Of these cases, our Practicum grants preference to work that contributed to more open and transparent government. We will also take on projects defending press entitlements such as reporter’s privilege, anonymous speech (particularly online), and free speech.

Additionally, our Practicum will advocate for policy solutions that better serve the public’s interest in effective newsgathering, and it will conduct outreach to equip journalists with tools to consistently and effectively assert their legal rights.

We are a project of Yale Law School’s Knight Law & Media Program. Yale Law School has long been active at the intersection of law, media, and journalism. Building on this tradition, K-LAMP marshals the energies of students who plan to be journalists, advocates for journalists, policy makers or leaders in the media industry; scholars who study cutting-edge issues of law and media; and working journalists who seek a deeper understanding of law, media, and policy.

Open Access Policy: Clients represented by the Practicum in access to records actions must agree that documents obtained will eventually be made available to the public on the Practicum’s website. Clients may, however, initially retain the documents for a period of “exclusive” use. An appropriate time frame will be determined on a case-by-base basis, taking into account the volume of records sought, the client’s reporting needs, and the public’s interest in speedy disclosure of source material.
